Member Spotlight: Green Horizons

When Green Horizons first opened its cannabis cultivation business in 2016, people thought what they were doing was impossible. But the founders bet on themselves, and a decade later, this cultivator is thriving in the desert town of Coachella, California. To learn more about this Cannabis Media Council member, we spoke with Carlos "Los" Arias, J.D., the co-founder and CEO, about what makes Green Horizons so successful.

Green Horizons in Coachella, California.

His role: My core responsibilities are helming day to day operations, strategic partnerships (i.e. Tommy Hilfiger, FOHSE), revenue amplification, and community engagement.

What sets Green Horizons apart: Green Horizons has proven that top-performing scaled cannabis cultivation is possible while being hyper-conscious about environmental impact. Early naysayers of our vision thought it impossible that we could operate 100,000+ square feet without air conditioning in a desert environment. Our proprietary evaporate cooling technology works year-round, and we're proud to co-create a more symbiotic relationship with the earth while producing high quality medicine.

Green Horizons’ mission: To proliferate global healing through plant medicine. Cannabis is our gateway. Other modalities and form factors to follow as the burgeoning cannabis and psychedelics industries evolve.

Green Horizons greatest achievement: Exhibition of resolve in the face of doubt. My partners and I personally put up the first $40M to launch Green Horizons because everybody else turned us down. We never doubted ourselves and put our own skin in the game. That takes courage, and I'd do it all over again if I had to.

Biggest challenge: Retaining our meritocratic startup culture as we scale. I tend this personally by being the first person on site every day and the last person to leave. Ultimately, the success or failure of the mission has to be owned by the chief executive. I take that obligation seriously and lead by understanding that ultimately I am here to serve. I surrender all else.
